It’s free, it tells you exactly what people who reach your store are searching for, and most stores open it once a year to see whether traffic is going up.

This is the monthly Search Console routine for online stores that we follow, with the specific decision that comes out of each report. Half an hour a month well spent.

1. Queries in positions 8 to 25

This is the report that leaves the most money on the table. These are searches for which you already appear but on the second page or at the end of the first, where almost nobody clicks.

What you do with this: sort by impressions, keep the ones with volume and zero or almost zero clicks, and work on those pages. Moving from position 15 to 6 on a query that many people already see is more profitable than any new article.

2. Pages with lots of impressions and no clicks

Google shows you and nobody enters. It’s almost always the title or the description: they don’t say what the person was looking for, or they don’t stand out from the other nine results.

What you do: rewrite the title with the real search first and a reason to click. It’s the cheapest SEO change and the one with the fastest effect.

3. The month’s new queries, the earliest signal

Compare the last 28 days with the previous 28 and keep what wasn’t there before. It’s the early signal that new content is getting in: it shows up here weeks before it gets a single click.

What you do: if the number goes up, the work is working even if clicks haven’t moved yet. If it doesn’t go up for two months in a row, something is wrong with what you’re publishing.

4. Index coverage

How many pages Google knows about and how many it has decided not to index. In a store, this is where serious problems show up: duplicate variations, filters generating endless URLs, discontinued product pages returning 404s.

What you do: if you have hundreds of “Discovered, currently not indexed,” you have a thin or duplicate content problem, not a quantity problem.

5. Broken links and 404s

Every product you remove leaves a dead URL that may still have links pointing to it. It’s fixed with a redirect to the category or the equivalent product.

What you do: review the 404s with traffic and redirect them. The ones nobody visits, let them die in peace.

6. Product structured data

Search Console warns you if the markup on your product pages has errors. Without it, you lose the price and rating in the search result, which is what makes people click you instead of the one next to you.

What you do: fix the errors as soon as they appear. A warning that builds up for months ends up disabling the enhancement for the whole domain.

The half-hour routine, in order

Using Search Console for online stores works better as a fixed routine than as something you check when something goes wrong. This is the script we follow, and it fits into half an hour:

Five minutes: compare the last 28 days with the previous 28. Only two numbers: impressions and distinct queries.

Ten minutes: filter by positions 8 to 25, sort by impressions, and note the five queries with the most volume and the fewest clicks. Those are this month’s work.

Five minutes: review the pages that have lost clicks compared with the previous period and see whether someone has overtaken them.

Five minutes: index coverage and structured data errors. Only look if there is anything new in red.

Five minutes: write down in a document what you decide to do. Without this part, the analysis is useless.

That last point is what separates looking at Search Console from using it. A month in which no written decision comes out is a month in which you haven’t done SEO, you’ve done contemplation.

Three things Search Console tells you that almost nobody listens to

What words your customer really uses. They are rarely the ones you use on the product page. If people arrive searching for “cover for X” and you call it “protective shell,” you have a copy decision served on a plate.

Which pages have lost their purpose. Pages with impressions that don’t match what you sell: usually they’re old articles that attract an audience that will never buy. It’s fine to leave them, but don’t invest any more in that direction.

Which country you’re growing in without realizing it. This is what surprises stores with translated content the most: sometimes growth is in a market you weren’t even thinking about, and that’s where it pays to push. The documentation for the Search Console performance report explains how to combine the country, page, and query filters, which is where the interesting part is.

What you can safely ignore in Search Console

Global average position. It mixes branded and generic queries and means nothing. Look at position by query.

Day-to-day changes. Daily noise is huge; always compare 28-day windows.

Global CTR. It drops when you grow in impressions, and that’s good, not bad.

Queries with a single impression. They’re long-tail noise.

A detail if you sell in several languages: filter by country and by page before drawing conclusions. A query can perform badly in Spain and very well in Italy, and the average hides that from you.

Would you rather have us look at it for you?

We read your Search Console every month, write about the queries where you’re already close, and apply the changes ourselves in the code. With a decisions report, not a charts report.

See the SEO service · Ask without obligation

And if what you see is that you appear a lot but nobody comes in, that’s where monthly SEO work comes in, or at least a search engine that can handle your catalog.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you check Search Console if you have an online store?

Once a month is enough and it’s the healthy thing to do. Checking it every day only creates anxiety: the data is delayed by two or three days and daily noise is huge.

Does Search Console for online stores replace Analytics?

No, they answer different things. Search Console counts what happens before the click; Analytics, what happens after.

Why don’t clicks match Analytics visits?

They never match, and that’s normal: they measure differently and Analytics loses visits from people who reject cookies.

How long does it take for new pages to appear?

From a few days to several weeks depending on the site’s authority. You can speed it up by requesting indexing for a specific URL, but do it sparingly.

Search Console for online stores is the most underused tool in e-commerce.
