The calculation is done slot by slot and location by location, not for a product in general.

In this guide we explain how to do that calculation, what each product family offers, what works in each type of location, what can no longer be sold in vending machines in Spanish schools since April 2026, and how to decide what to take out and what to put in.

On this page

The short answer

The calculation per slot

Family by family

By location

What cannot be sold in schools

Price

What to remove and what to add

Common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

The short answer

What a slot leaves is the margin on each unit times the units sold, minus what expires.

VAT changes the margin: in Spain, a sugary soft drink carries 21% VAT and water 10%, so at the same price the soft drink leaves less.

Each location calls for a different assortment: what flies in a gym does not move in a workshop.

Decisions are made with sales data per slot, not from memory: every few weeks, change what leaves the least.

The calculation per slot

For each product, three data points: what you keep from each sale, how many are sold per week, and how many expire. Water, which leaves the least per unit, is the best slot in the machine because it sells fast. And the soft drink, although it sells for more, loses part of its margin because of the 21% VAT.

If you are self-employed (autónomo) under recargo de equivalencia (the Spanish VAT scheme for self-employed retailers), everything the machine takes in is yours, but the cost of the products includes VAT and the surcharge. We explain it in our guide to VAT on vending machines in Spain, with the rate for each product.

Family by family

Cold drinks (water, soft drinks, isotonic drinks, juices): usually the fastest-moving items. They last for months and do not spoil. Watch the VAT rate for each one.

Salty and sweet snacks (chips, nuts, biscuits, chocolate bars): long shelf life and medium margin. Chocolate suffers in the heat if the machine is not cooled.

Fresh items (sandwiches, salads, fruit, dairy): the highest margin per unit and the highest risk. They need refrigeration, frequent visits, and good forecasting, or waste eats the profit.

Coffee and hot drinks: high margin per cup, but the machine needs cleaning, water, maintenance, and quality product, or people stop buying.

Non-food items (chargers, headphones, hygiene products): they sell little, but they do not expire and the margin is high. In Spain they carry 21% VAT. They work in specific places: stations, hotels, hospitals.

By location

Offices: coffee, water, and something for mid-morning. Busy Monday to Friday, and almost nothing in August.

Factories and workshops with shifts: cold drinks, filling snacks, and sandwiches, also at night.

Gyms: water, isotonic drinks, bars, and protein drinks. Few pastries.

Hospitals and care homes: visitors and staff at any hour: water, coffee, sandwiches, and some hygiene items.

Stations and transit locations: quick purchase: drinks, snacks, and chargers.

Hotels and apartments: water, soft drinks, snacks, and what people forget at home, like a toothbrush.

Before filling a new machine, ask the venue what the people there buy and look at what the nearest café or shop sells. Then let the sales speak.

What cannot be sold in schools

In Spain, Royal Decree (Real Decreto) 315/2025 has been in force since 16 April 2026. It applies to public, state-subsidized and private schools, from pre-school (age three) up to bachillerato (the last two years of secondary school) and basic and intermediate vocational training. It does not apply to universities. Their machines may not sell any food or drink that, per portion, exceeds these limits:

200 kilocalories;

7.8 grams of fat, and no more than 35% of calories;

2.2 grams of saturated fat, and no more than 10% of calories;

5 grams of added or free sugars, and no more than 10% of calories;

0.5 grams of salt;

and nothing with trans fats, except the natural ones in dairy and meat.

The fat limits do not apply to whole milk, yogurt, or nuts without added fats, and the sugar limit does not count the sugar in fruit, juices without added sugar, or the lactose in milk. In addition:

packaged products with more than 15 mg of caffeine per 100 ml may not be sold, except to adults in areas students cannot enter;

machines may not be placed in areas that pre-school and primary pupils can reach;

and they may not carry advertising for any product.

In practice, sugary soft drinks, energy drinks, and almost all pastries are out. Spain’s regions (comunidades autónomas) may have stricter rules: check with the relevant one before filling a machine in a school.

Price

Prices that are easy to pay, rounded to common coins.

A few cents on the best sellers move the result more than any savings in expenses.

Look at nearby competition: if the café next door sells coffee for less, your machine will notice.

Remember VAT: at the same price, what is taxed at 21% leaves less than what is taxed at 10%.

What to remove and what to add

Measure sales for four to eight weeks for each slot, using what you note on each visit.

Rank the slots by what they leave per week, after subtracting what expires.

Replace the last two or three with something new, and test first in just one machine.

Give more space to what sells most: two slots for water if it runs out before your visit. Every empty slot is lost sales.

Watch expired items in euros: if a product expires often, stock less of it or remove it from that machine.

The space in the machine also decides how often you need to visit: we explain it in our guide on how often to restock a vending machine. In each machine, the most profitable is the one that leaves the most per slot and per week: margin per unit times units sold, minus what expires. Often it is a cheap drink that sells fast.

What sells the most in vending machines?

It depends on the location, but cold drinks and coffee are usually the fastest-moving. The safe approach is to measure sales for each slot in your machine.

Is it worth selling sandwiches and fresh items?

Only if the machine is refrigerated, sells enough, and you can visit often. If not, what expires takes the margin from what you sell.

What VAT applies to vending machine products in Spain?

Each one has its own: water and most snacks, 10%; sugary or sweetened soft drinks, 21%. The full table is in our guide to VAT on vending machines in Spain.

What can be sold in a vending machine in a Spanish secondary school?

Only food and drinks within the limits of Royal Decree 315/2025: at most 200 kilocalories, 5 grams of added sugars, and 0.5 grams of salt per portion, among others. No sugary soft drinks or energy drinks.

How often should I change the assortment?

Every few weeks, with data: change the two or three slots that leave the least and test the new items in just one machine before rolling them out to all of them.

Conclusion

The most profitable products do not come from a list: they come from the sales of each slot in each location. Do the math with what each unit leaves, what sells, and what expires, take into account the VAT on each product, respect school rules, and regularly change what leaves the least. It is the cheapest way to make the same machine earn more.

This article is for information only. The rules for selling in schools may be stricter in some Spanish regions: check them before filling a machine in a school.

Useful links

Vending machine profitability: how much one really makes: the calculation for the whole machine.

VAT on vending machines in Spain: the rate for each product.

How often to restock a vending machine: space and visits.

Empty slots and expired products: sales lost without noticing.

Royal Decree 315/2025, in the BOE (Spain’s official gazette).

The most profitable vending machine products: what each slot earns per week, the VAT on each product, what works in each location and what schools ban.

most profitable vending machine products,best products for vending machines,what to sell in a vending machine,best-selling vending products,productos más rentables vending
Most profitable vending machine products | EHERO
The most profitable vending machine products: what each slot earns per week, the VAT on each product, what works in each location and what schools ban.
[826
8333,8334,8185,8332
post-18822","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-digital-transformation","tag-maquinas-de-vending","tag-rentabilidad","tag-reponlo-en","tag-vending
["GET
