EU VAT calculator: which VAT to charge on each sale
Do you sell to another country in the European Union and don’t know whether to apply Spanish VAT, the customer’s VAT, or none at all? Choose where you sell from, where the customer is, whether they are a business or a private individual, and what you sell, and the calculator tells you the rate and the amount. It uses the official 2026 rates for each country.
Indicative result based on the general EU rules for distance sales of goods and electronic services. The actual rate depends on the specific product or service: check it with your tax adviser.
Want your WooCommerce store to apply these rules on its own? EHERO Woo VAT works out the VAT on every order based on the country and type of customer. Discover EHERO Woo VAT
How the calculator decides
- Customer in your own country
Your usual VAT, at the rate that applies to the product.
- Business from another EU country with a valid VAT number
The sale is VAT-free. The intra-Community supply is exempt and the customer accounts for the VAT in their country. First, check their number in VIES.
- Private individual from another country, if you have not exceeded €10,000 in distance sales to the EU this year or the previous one
Your VAT, as if you were selling in your own country.
- Private individual from another country, above that threshold
The VAT of the customer’s country, which you declare through the One-Stop Shop (OSS) without registering there. The sale that pushes you over the threshold already uses the destination rate.
If the product qualifies for a reduced rate that that country does not have — Denmark, for example, only has one rate — the calculator uses the standard rate and warns you.
What it does not cover
This is guidance for sales of goods within the EU. It does not cover exports outside the Union, the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, special schemes (second-hand goods, travel agencies), sales through a marketplace acting as supplier, or services with their own rules. And the reduced rate depends on each specific product: check the rate for what you sell in that country’s product page.
Frequently asked questions
What counts toward the €10,000 threshold?
The total of your distance sales of goods to private individuals in other EU countries and your telecommunications, broadcasting and electronic services to private individuals in other countries, all together and not by country. We explain it in the €10,000 threshold in distance sales.
Where do the rates come from?
From the European Commission’s official database and each country’s legislation, reviewed in September 2026. You can find them all in the VAT rates table by country.
Can I have this in my store?
Yes: EHERO Woo VAT applies these rules to every WooCommerce order, validates the VAT number in VIES, and monitors the threshold for you.
