Multiple images per variation in WooCommerce | EHERO Woo Variation Gallery
Multiple images per variation in WooCommerce
WooCommerce only lets you assign one photo to each variation. EHERO Woo Variation Gallery gives each variation its own complete gallery: when you choose a color or size, the product page shows only those images and hides the rest. No duplicate products and no code changes.

How it works
The sequence is the one your customer already expects to find in any major store. They open a variable T-shirt product and see the general product gallery. As soon as they choose the “olive green” color or size L, the gallery is rebuilt instantly: only the photos for that variation appear —the front, the back, the fabric detail, the model shot— and the others disappear. If that variation has a video or a 360° sequence, it appears in the same gallery as another slide.
Everything happens without reloading the page and without you writing a line of JavaScript: the plugin listens to WooCommerce’s variation change event, filters the attachments, and redraws the thumbnails with a fade transition.
And when that customer adds the product to the cart, the thumbnail they see in the cart and in the order is the one for their variation, not the generic parent product image. That detail prevents a large share of the “I think you sent me the wrong color” emails.
WooCommerce only allows one image per variation, and your customers notice
Open any variable product in your store, expand a variation, and look at the image box: there is room for one photo. One. It has always been a core WooCommerce limitation and has nothing to do with your theme or page builder. The result is that a dress available in five colors shows one thumbnail per color and, from there, a shared gallery where all variations are mixed together.
The customer who chose navy blue ends up scrolling through photos of red and beige, trying to guess which one matches what they are about to buy. When the doubt is not resolved on the product page, it is resolved elsewhere: by closing the tab. In products where appearance is the buying decision —fashion, footwear, decor, furniture, jewelry, cosmetics— that visual confusion costs you first in conversion and then in returns.
Homegrown alternatives are usually worse than the problem. The most common one is duplicating the product: one page per color so each one can have its own gallery. In two weeks your catalog is bloated, stock is split across pages nobody remembers to update, reviews are fragmented across five URLs, and nearly identical content ends up hurting your SEO. The other option is to put all the photos in the parent product gallery and hope the customer can tell them apart, which is exactly what will not happen.
Being able to show multiple images per variation in WooCommerce is not an aesthetic whim: it closes the gap between what the customer chooses and what the customer sees.
EHERO Woo Variation Gallery: a dedicated gallery for each variation
The plugin adds to the variation editor what WooCommerce never included —a multiple-image selector per variation, with featured image and ordering— and, on the front end, the logic that decides what is shown at any given moment. This is what changes in your store:
Unlimited gallery per variation
Assign as many photos as you want to each variation from the Variations tab. Drag to reorder them and click the star to mark the featured image. When the variation is selected on the product page, only those images are shown.
Images by attribute, without repeating work
A T-shirt in 4 colors and 5 sizes means 20 variations, but only 4 photo sets. Assign the images to the “Color” attribute value and all sizes of that color inherit the gallery. Set it up once and it works for the whole product.
Shared images
Some photos apply to all variations: the size guide, the measurement chart, the stitching detail, the material certificate. Mark them as shared and they appear in the gallery of any variation, without duplicating them twenty times.
Videos and 360° viewer
Add YouTube, Vimeo, or direct MP4 videos as another slide in that variation’s gallery. And with a sequence of photos taken in shooting order, the 360° viewer lets the customer rotate the product by dragging with the mouse or finger.
Badges and watermark
Variation labels —New, Sale, Out of stock, or custom text like “-20%”— over the image. And a configurable text watermark with position, size, color, background, opacity, rotation, and shadow to protect your product photos.
Catalog image swap
On the shop page, when you hover over a product’s variations the thumbnail changes to that color’s image. The customer compares from the listing and enters the product page already decided, instead of opening and closing five products.
Behind those six features is an important design decision: you choose the default behavior. You define which gallery is shown before the customer selects anything —all images, the first variation’s gallery, or WooCommerce’s default variation— whether the featured image stays visible at all times, and what happens when a variation has no images of its own.
The plugin also includes a statistics panel that records which variations your customers look at most. You will know whether the color you feature is really the one that attracts attention, or whether the most viewed one does not match the best seller: direct information to decide what to photograph better and what stock to reinforce.
How to get it running (without touching a line of code)
- Install and activate the license
Upload the ZIP from Plugins → Add New, activate it, and paste your license key. From then on you receive automatic updates from the WordPress dashboard, just like any other plugin.
- Assign photos to each variation
Edit a variable product, go to the Variations tab, expand a variation, and click “Select images.” Choose the photos from the media library, drag to reorder them, and mark the featured image with the star. Repeat for the variations that need it.
- Set up shortcuts
If your product combines color and size, assign the images to the “Color” attribute in the attribute map and forget about repeating them size by size. Mark common photos, such as the size guide or measurement chart, as shared.
- Adjust the behavior and publish
In Settings you decide the initial gallery, the transition, whether to enable videos, 360°, badges, or watermark, and whether the thumbnail changes in the catalog. Save, open the product page, and check the result in two clicks.
If your product page is built with a page builder like Elementor or Bricks, or a theme with its own gallery, there is a field to add the CSS selectors for that container so filtering works there too. It is the closest thing to code you will see: paste a selector.
Who is this variation gallery plugin for?
- Fashion, footwear, and accessories. It is the textbook case: five colors, four sizes, and a customer who wants to see the garment worn in the exact color they chose. Together with visual swatches, the product page behaves like a big-brand store.
- Decor, furniture, and home textiles. A sofa in six upholstery options needs six lifestyle galleries, not six thumbnails. Here the difference between seeing the fabric and guessing it is literally the sale.
- Jewelry, cosmetics, and personalized gifts. Gold, silver, or rose finishes, lipstick shades, engravings: small details that are only appreciated with several close-up photos and, often, a 360° spin.
- Stores with imported catalogs or dropshipping. When the supplier sends photos grouped by color, the attribute map avoids having to assign them variation by variation every time a new product arrives.
- Anyone who already duplicated products and wants to go back. If you have five pages for the same item just so each one can have its own gallery, this plugin lets you consolidate them into a single variable product without losing the visual experience.
Compatibility
EHERO Woo Variation Gallery works on the native WooCommerce variable product: it does not create its own product type or move your data to parallel tables. It works on WordPress 5.8 or higher, declares compatibility with HPOS —high-performance order storage— and is tested up to WooCommerce 9.6.
- WordPress 5.8+
- WooCommerce 6.0+
- PHP 7.4+
- HPOS
- Native variable products
- Elementor
- Bricks Builder
- Custom selectors
- Swatch compatible
If you deactivate the plugin, your products keep working: variations retain their native image and the product page returns to standard behavior. There is no technical dependency locking you in.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to duplicate products to have multiple images per variation in WooCommerce?
No, and that is precisely the point of the plugin. You keep a single variable product, with its stock, reviews, and URL. What changes is that each variation can have a full gallery instead of just one photo. If you already duplicated products for this reason, you can consolidate them back into one.
Do I have to assign photos variation by variation?
Only if you want maximum detail. The usual approach is to assign them to the attribute value: if your photos depend on color and not size, you set up the images for “Blue” once and all blue sizes inherit that gallery. For a T-shirt with 4 colors and 5 sizes, that means 4 setups instead of 20.
Does it work with my theme or page builder?
With themes that use the standard WooCommerce gallery it works without any setup. If the product page is built with Elementor, Bricks, or another page builder with its own gallery, there is a field in the settings where you can add the CSS selectors for that container so filtering applies there too.
What happens if a variation has no assigned images?
You decide in the settings. It can fall back first to the attribute —the color gallery, for example— and, if that does not exist either, show the full product gallery; it can skip the attribute and go straight to showing everything; or it can show nothing beyond what is assigned. You can also force the product featured image to stay visible at all times.
Do videos and the 360° viewer slow down the product page?
Lazy loading is enabled by default, so variation images and videos are not loaded until they are needed. Videos are inserted as a gallery slide and the 360° viewer reuses photos you have already uploaded, without heavy external libraries. Even so, both features can be disabled independently if you prefer a minimal product page.
Does the correct image also reach the cart and the order?
Yes. The cart and order thumbnail uses the image of the chosen variation instead of the generic parent product photo. It is enabled by default and reduces issues from customers who think they received a different item than the one they bought.
