Full Product Description
GPSR WooCommerce: comply with Regulation (EU) 2023/988 without filling in product by product
Since 13 December 2024, the General Product Safety Regulation —the GPSR, Regulation (EU) 2023/988— is fully applicable and explicitly covers online sales. Every distance offer must show, clearly and visibly before purchase, the manufacturer details, the EU responsible person, product identification, and applicable safety warnings.
The problem is not understanding the rule: it is filling it in. A store with 3,000 SKUs and 60 brands cannot open product by product to type the same address and email sixty times. That is why most still do not comply while marketplaces remove non-compliant listings.
EHERO Woo GPSR is the GPSR WooCommerce plugin that turns that legal duty into minutes of work: you define the data once, let the cascade inherit it across the whole catalog, and check with a traffic light which products are ready and which are missing exactly which data. All inside your WordPress, with no external services and without touching a line of code.
What GPSR is and why it already applies to you
The GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation) replaces Directive 2001/95/EC and updates the safety framework for non-food consumer products sold in the EU that do not have their own sector-specific legislation.
- It applies to any seller who sells physical products to EU consumers, wherever the business is established.
- It explicitly includes distance selling: your own website and marketplaces.
- This is not a future procedure: the date has already passed and non-compliance exposes you to product withdrawal, penalties, and listing blocks.
What your product page must show according to the Regulation
Each distance offer must show four groups of information before purchase. The GPSR WooCommerce plugin models them exactly, without inventing fields the regulation does not require.
- Manufacturer details: name, trade name or registered brand, postal address, and electronic contact address.
- EU responsible person: name and contact details (postal and email) of the economic operator established in the Union, when the manufacturer is not in the EU.
- Product identification: type, batch or serial number, and an image of the product —covered by the WooCommerce featured image—.
- Safety warnings and instructions in writing, in the language of the country of sale, when applicable.
Work by brand: fill it in once, comply across the whole catalog
The manufacturer is linked to the brand, not to the product. That is why the plugin’s big differentiator is the fast-fill GPSR Brands page: fill in the data once per brand and all its products become compliant instantly.
- Table with all your brands, their number of products, and their status (Defined / Inherits).
- Inline editing via AJAX, without reloading the page or entering each term.
- For a toy store, a pharmacy store, or an electronics shop with dozens of brands, the difference between one afternoon and several weeks.
- Automatically detects your brand taxonomy: EHERO Woo Brands, WooCommerce native brands (
product_brand, WC 9.6+), Perfect Brands, YITH, and others; you can also choose it or disable it in the settings. - Any category or individual product can override the brand when needed, and if you do not use a brand plugin the cascade falls back to categories and the store.
Four-level cascading inheritance
The cascade resolves data from the most specific to the most general: product → brand → category → store. And it does so in a way that no single field can imitate.
- Each information group (manufacturer / EU responsible person) is inherited as a block, as an atomic unit: levels are never mixed within the same group.
- This way, legally inconsistent data are never published, such as one manufacturer’s name with another’s address.
- The tri-state indicator “manufacturer established in the EU” is set at store, brand, category, or product level and travels with the level that wins the resolution.
- Type, batch, and warnings —which by nature are per product— are filled in only where appropriate.
Automatic “Product Safety (GPSR)” block on the product page
The Regulation requires the information to be visible before purchase. The block is inserted only on the product page, without editing templates or pasting shortcodes by hand.
- Four configurable positions: product tab (recommended), right after the price, native accordion (
<details>, no JavaScript) under the buy button, or at the end of the page. - Inline SVG pictograms (shield, warning triangle, factory, EU, label, manual) can be enabled or disabled, with no external requests and no impact on speed.
- Shows manufacturer, brand, address and email, EU responsible person, type, batch or serial number, and warnings, with a customizable block title in your store’s language.
- The block does not turn off if the license expires: we never remove legally required safety information from a live store; gating only affects the admin panel.
- For the same reason, GPSR data are kept when uninstalling: they are the merchant’s compliance data, not the plugin’s.
Compliance validator with traffic light and % of catalog compliant
The GPSR Status panel is what turns compliance into something measurable. It analyzes the entire catalog and classifies each product with a traffic light: green (complete), amber (partial), red (no data), or gray (exempt).
- List of exactly which data is missing in each product, with filters (all, incomplete, complete, partial, no data, exempt) and pagination.
- Metric for percentage of catalog compliant, cached, invalidated on each save, and recalculable on demand.
- Warning in the editor for any published product that is missing mandatory data.
Manufacturer and EU responsible person with legal precision
Validation is faithful to the wording of Regulation (EU) 2023/988, not an invented list of required fields. Requiring too much is also a problem: it blocks green status on products that already comply.
- Accepts the name OR registered brand of the manufacturer as the identifier, as the article’s alternative wording states.
- Only requires an EU responsible person if the manufacturer is outside the Union: if it is already in the EU, it is itself the responsible operator.
- The manufacturer, the EU responsible person when applicable, the type, and the image block green status; the brand, batch, and warnings are shown but do not block, because the Regulation itself makes them conditional.
Product exemption: services, downloads, and out of scope
Real catalogs mix physical products with services, downloads, or items with their own sector-specific legislation. Forcing you to fill them in “so the panel turns green” would be absurd.
- Mark any product as exempt (out of scope) with an internal reason for your own records.
- Exempt items do not show the safety block or count as incomplete.
- They count toward the compliant percentage, so the traffic light reflects your real situation and not a false red.
Multilingual: each customer, in their language
The Regulation requires warnings in the language of the country of sale, and the plugin solves this without duplicating factual work.
- With EHERO Woo Multilang, factual data (manufacturer, EU responsible person, identification) are resolved from the original product in all translations and the block appears complete in each language.
- The validator counts each product only once, without inflating or penalizing the compliant percentage because of translations.
- With WPML or Polylang, each translation edits its own warnings (includes
wpml-config.xml). - Full Spanish translation included and manual integrated in ES/EN.
Marketplaces: why Amazon and Miravia already ask for it
Marketplaces got ahead of the authorities: Amazon, Miravia, and others already require GPSR data to keep listings active and suspend those that do not provide it.
- By centralizing data by brand and category in WooCommerce, you have a single source of truth that also feeds your external listings.
- The status panel tells you which brands you are missing before the marketplace blocks the product.

Works especially well with…
GPSR compliance looks best when the catalog is well organized by brands, categories, and languages.
- EHERO Woo Brands — the brand taxonomy that quick fill relies on: one well-defined brand covers all its products.
- EHERO Woo Multilang — factual data is resolved from the original product and the safety block appears complete in each language.
- EHERO Woo Categories — a well-categorized catalog makes the cascade category level resolve much more effectively.
Practical case: a toy store with 4,200 SKUs and 58 brands started with almost the entire panel in red. After filling in the 58 brands from GPSR Brands —one afternoon of work— it moved to more than 95% of the catalog compliant, and the traffic light exposed the four non-EU brands that needed an EU responsible person.
Frequently asked questions
What exactly does GPSR require to be shown in an online store?
Four groups of data before purchase: manufacturer (name or brand, postal address and email), responsible person in the EU when the manufacturer is outside the Union, product identification (image, type, and batch or serial number), and safety warnings in the language of the country of sale. The plugin models exactly those four groups.
Do I have to fill in the data product by product?
No, and that is exactly the point. The fastest way is by brand from GPSR Brands: since the manufacturer is tied to the brand, one filled-in brand covers all its products. Categories and products only override when needed.
When do I need a responsible person in the EU?
Only when the manufacturer is established outside the European Union: importers, dropshipping from outside the EU, or non-EU brands. If the manufacturer is already in the EU, they themselves are the responsible operator and the validator does not require you to designate another one.
Does it work with my brand plugin and multilingual stores?
Yes. It detects EHERO Woo Brands, native WooCommerce brands, Perfect Brands, YITH, and others, and it is compatible with EHERO Woo Multilang, WPML, and Polylang. Without a brand or language plugin, it still works in simple mode.
What about services or products that do not apply?
You can mark them as exempt (out of scope) with an internal reason: they do not show the safety block, do not count as incomplete, and add to the compliance percentage so the traffic light reflects your real situation.
Does the plugin guarantee that I comply with GPSR?
It is a compliance aid tool, not legal advice. It makes it easier to show on the product page what Regulation (EU) 2023/988 requires and validates that that data is present, but it cannot verify that it is correct or that the product is safe. The merchant remains ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the data, physical labeling, and the rest of the obligations.
